Approximately 4 million Syrians
have
been forced to flee their homes and their country since the onset of
the civil war
in Syria on March 15, 2011. Many Syrians have crossed the
surrounding borders into Lebanon, Jordon, Iraq and Turkey, as well as
making the dangerous journey to Greece on small crowded inflatable
boats.
Thousands of Syrian refugees have also made their way to both
eastern and western European countries.
Some Syrian refugees have resettled in Canada. In the fall of 2015, the newly-elected federal government pledged to help resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees. Of these 25,000 Syrian refugees, 10,000 arrived in Canada in late 2015. The remaining 15,000 arrived in early 2016. In December 2015, the Government of Canada pledged to help resettle up to 50,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016.
On November 23, 2015, a group of concerned citizens from the Ottawa
area attended a refugee sponsorship information session in Kanata,
hosted by Refugee 613. Attendees had the opportunity to
meet with other like-minded individuals who might be interested in
sponsoring a refugee family or individual. During this meeting, several
attendees exchanged e-mails and began sharing information regarding
refugee sponsorship. Some members of this initial group attended a
second information session/workshop hosted by Refugee 613 and the group
held its inaugural meeting on December 7, 2015.
One of the goals of Refugee Aid Canada is to sponsor a selected Syrian refugee family, a young couple with four children. They are currently residing in Lebanon.
We have also have been matched with a refugee family of four, a couple and their two daughters, through the BVOR program. We are happy to report that this family arrived in Canada on January 4th, 2017! See the latest update here for more information about this.
Refugee Aid Canada is working with a Sponsorship Agreement Holder, namely the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa.
Help us to raise funds to fulfill these two goals Donate to Refugee Aid Canada.
